“My check engine light just came on. What should I do?”
Your check engine light is a warning from your vehicles main computer that something is wrong with the emissions control system. Most of the time this is not a critical issue that requires immediate attention. However the check engine light could be a warning that something is very wrong with the vehicle.
If the vehicle is not acting normal or something feels different immediately before or after your check engine light comes on then it is advised that you stop the vehicle and call your mechanic immediately. This precaution may very well save your engine from major damage.
If the vehicle feels normal with no discernible difference in operation then there is no need to panic. Call your mechanic at your convenience to schedule a time to have the problem checked out.
The check engine light does not always mean an expensive repair job. But the longer this light goes unchecked the more likely a repair can get expensive.
HOT TIP! If your check engine light comes on shortly after filling your vehicle up with gas then it is possible the gas cap was not secured properly. Checking your gas cap to ensure it is tight could save you an unnecessary trip to your mechanic. After filling up make sure your gas cap clicks 3 times before closing the fuel door.
“Why is there a charge to diagnose my check engine light?”
Everest charges a very nominal fee of $89 to diagnose some problems on your vehicle because it costs us money to determine what is wrong with your vehicle.
Everest is committed to being able to properly diagnose just about anything that could go wrong with your vehicle. Our technicians are highly educated and use very expensive and complex equipment to be able to diagnose problems that range from a cracked vacuum line on a Chevy Cavalier, or a faulty ABS computer on a BMW, or a carbon filled EGR valve on a Honda Accord. Most problems take 1-3 hours to properly diagnose.
Newer vehicles are much more complex than most people realize. Tune-ups are only needed every 60,000-90,000 miles. Engines run 10x cleaner than your parents car yet make 50% more horsepower. Some vehicles come off the assembly line with 7 actual computers that are used to makes todays vehicles safer, faster, cleaner, and more luxurious than cars in the past.
All this complexity has made it a lot more challenging for your mechanic to properly diagnose the myriad of problems that can occur in todays vehicles.
